Upon arriving Sunday night, the pool was filthy. All of this happened within days of coming to the house. I called to say no one had returned our call and the rep said “The listing does not say heated pool, do you have proof?” I was so offended! But, yes we do have proof. This was our “splurge.” My husband called to complain and ask for money back- no one ever returned his call. If the listing had been correct, we could have saved thousands by booking a cheaper house with a pool. We paid more for this rental compared to other rentals on the island so we could have a heated pool. After investigating, she told us that it was wrong on the listing, and that the pool couldn’t be heated. We called a few days before, the customer service rep confirmed that she saw it advertised as heated, but said it would not let her request to have it heated. The pool was advertised as a heated pool.

(2) In an (unplanned) analysis of plan confusion, we estimate that 20 to 37 percent of non-participants mistakenly believed themselves to be enrolled-these employees enrolled at high rates when prompted to review their enrollment status. We describe four main findings: (1) We corroborate prior work showing pervasive deficits in retirement literacy and their correlation with saving but reject any meaningful increase in saving from personalized recommendations that demonstrably improve literacy. We provide evidence on four of these frictions through a field experiment randomizing undersaving employees to information- and incentive-based treatments linked to a survey assessing each friction’s baseline incidence. Economists have advanced several psychological frictions to explain why many 401(k)-eligible employees undersave for retirement despite generous matching incentives.
